Definition

A statistic $T(x_{1\dots x_n})$ is a function of random variables $x_1\dots x_n$ that do not contain any unknown parameter.

Example

$\bar{x}=\frac{{\sum }^n{x}_i}{n}$ is a function of $x_i$‘s that can be inferred solely from the sample itself.
